As a new player to this league I just wanted to chime in a bit and give you my take on things, maybe to give an idea on how us newbies to the league think (Although I can only speak for myself). I played ball up to a year in high school, and 2 years ago i played 2 seasons in the PCBL wood bat league. This is my first experience with the avmabl.
I was super stoked to be asked to join this league and to start a new team (BREWers). I had no idea a league existed in the av. Everything has been a positive experience so far. I was a little concerned about the potential of being booted out of the league but it's not for me to make that call. However, if it was to happen (and it sounds like it wont) maybe some kind of earlier deadline for money can be implimented. That way I, or any of our guys, could have made the tryout and been drated by an existing team if an uneven amount of teams was going to be the result.
I think everyones goal here is the same. To play and have fun, whether that means serious competition or just getting the chance to play with friends and have an excuse to get out with the boys and some beers after. As a newbie, I just wanna play! Thats what i signed up for and payed my dues for.
Here are my 2 cents on the league and what I think about these posts. First off, I personally voted against splitting the league in divisions. I do enjoy competition and winning (who doesnt!) but I feel like this league doesnt have the need to split up. I want to have the opportunity to face the best pitchers in the league and also have the opportunity to take advantage of some of the guys who maybe dont throw as good. I like to compete and win but moreover I like to compete with myself. I try to get on base every at bat and keep a decent average and make no errors on the field. We arent playing for big contracts and we arent going to be champs of the world, so I dont mind getting spanked each week or winning em all. Im more concerned about not striking out and diasppointing myself. I was drafted to the worst team in the PCBL but I still had so much fun and the other teams that beat us every week, we made sure they had fun as well.
I like playing with friends and I dont think breaking down teams and just making an open draft is the answer for better competion. I do think though if teams were so lopsided, maybe an idea would be to split the best teams in two and pull from the draft to welcome new players onto good teams. That way we get two good teams out of one awesome team. But then again Im down to see any team come my way. Id play against the real dodgers or angels and try my best, but would enjoy getting the piss kicked out of us. I just think its a real turn off for anyone (especially a newbie) to be put in a "B" catagory. And just like the big leagues, teams need years to build to be good (unless you got the money like those damn Yankees) so why dont we let nature take its course and the powers will shift. But for people to expect to only play the best, well, it just doesnt happen that way no matter how good or poor you and your team may be. We ALL want good competion and the ability to compete. So I think splitting the league takes the ability to compete with the best away from the "B" guys. To get better teams, you have to play with better teams. Meaning, you get better with better competion. The worst teams need to see the best teams. I think time is the answer here. If a team stinks, then draft some talent and bring in more people next season.
Botttom line is, is that we all like to play. Already we have met and scrimaged good groups of dudes and thats what its all about. THANK YOUs to the Reds and Rangers for coming out and scrimagging with us and to the Bulls for joing us in one of those games. I look forward to playing you guys and seeing your pitchers in game situations.
Whatever is decided, just keep in mind that the good teams arent the only ones thrirsty to see the good teams. I think everyone deserves a shot for some good competion. The egos are the minority in a league like this. Lets play ball!
